Fried Green Tomatoes

Paul Nelson, Givhans, S.C.
It's a good thing to be on friendly terms with a farmer at this time of year! Paul Nelson kindly invited me out to his farm in Givhan's and I'd barely settled in before the smell of friend green tomatoes pulled me into the kitchen. Paul was slicing up tomatoes fresh from the garden and serving the tangy slices hot from the pan. Delicious! I came home with a bag of tomatoes, potatoes, onions, squash and the recipe to make a batch of week killer.

Besides catching up with Farmer Paul and his wife Lana, I got to meet Summerville Journal Scene columnist Julie Smith Hoff and her husband Mike after being social media friends for a couple of years.

A good day and I hope you had one as well.

If I could pull one off the plate I would. I know they must be delicious. Paul is quite the gardener and you Joan have a great blog!

I love fried green tomatoes, but I like them well-done - fried in a cast-iron skillet until the cornmeal is super browned on both sides! Then, it's a couple of seconds on a paper towel, just long enough to salt and pepper them, and right into my mouth!

I have been lucky enough to be in their home and enjoy those tomatoes and yummy cucumber water. Love Paul & Lana....

Marcheline - very close. He dipped them in water to make the cornmeal cling and salted the cornmeal.

What a great couple! I felt lucky to be included. They take good care of their friends.

They were good and I have plenty of tomatoes to try it myself.

Thank you!

It is a southern dish. It might not me on menus in Ottawa!

It must be tiresome for the folks down there to hear from northerners like me that the only time I had previously heard of fried green tomatoes was when I read Fannie Flagg's very special book.

I remember that my father, who was from Mississippi, used to eat them 'maters all of the time. When I was younger, I didn't enjoy them, but after I grew and "got to know better", I love them! Yum!
