Fire at Bogard & Rutledge

Rutledge Ave., Charleston, S.C.

I can't even imagine waking up to this but luckily someone did wake up and got everyone else out. No one was hurt although I'm sure they lost almost everything. The Post & Courier site has a lot more photos here. Fire is always a worry with these old wooden houses.

Hi Joan, I couldn't drive down Rutledge from Hampton Park to CofC due to the roadblocks this morning. I'm relieved that no one was injured. Was this corner house once Bill and Cathy McCullough's home? I think I recognize the steps and planters. How very sad. One of my CofC freshmen lost her entire family home and all four pets due to a fire last Fall. She was actually driving back to Charleston on a Sunday evening when it burned to the ground and her family didn't want to tell her while she was enroute. She told me that losing the pets she had grown up with was far worse than losing the "stuff." I can only imagine.

I don't know. It sounds like it is college rentals now. I know I am always glad to turn the corner and see my house after being away. We are probably lucky we've had some rain recently so it wasn't as dry as it had been.

I'm sure those old houses are tinderboxes after all these years. I've heard that New Orleans lives in mortal fear of their #1 tourist attraction, the centuries-old French Quarter, going up in flames some day.

Glad no one was hurt. :)

:( My husband lived in that house his first year in Medical School at MUSC. We were engaged at the time and I spent a lot of time there. :( So so sad! It was a beautiful old place.

Oh Catherine, that is sad. I see in the paper that there have been two other reports of people finding things burning on their porch downtown. That makes it sound like another case of arson. Really shocking.

Not only did they lose their stuff, they lost their transportation too! That is so scary to think about.

Me too Gerald, since I live in one of these old wooden houses as well.
