Doors of Charleston - the alternate series

Doors of Charleston, King St., Charleston, S.C.
Why do you think this one was left off the Doors of Charleston poster? Huh, huh, huh? I spotted it on King St. and couldn't resist grabbing a shot.

Meanwhile in other news, the purpose of my walk this morning was to replace my broken Charleston Pirate Mug only to discover that the Margaritaville shop is closed. Sob. I've been drinking out of my favorite mug with no handle for weeks and this was the day I was going to take care of it. Sob. How will I drink my tea? I've already burnt my fingerprints off holding the hot mug with no handle.

I hope everyone is having a good long weekend. I send thanks to all the good volunteers who are staffing the desks at Roper St. Francis Healthcare so I can have the day off. Y'all are the best!

Here is another door for our Alternative Doors of Charleston poster. This one is in the building behind Memminger Elementary School on Archdale St.

Charleston doors

Charleston doors, Nunan St., Charleston, SC
I believe I have enough images to do my own alternative Doors of Charleston poster. These finds are on Nunan St. I love the textured blue in the shot above and below is one of Shepard Fairey's images.

Doors of Charleston - the alternative collection

Burns Lane, Charleston, S.C.
Hey, I thought it was supposed to rain all day! It wasn't a bad day at all.  I stayed up most of last night reading a book on my tablet so it was a good thing I didn't have to leap out of bed and get to work this morning.

Here are a couple of additions to my Charleston Doors series. It doesn't quite match the poster that is sold to tourists that can be found here: Doors of Charleston Poster. My first shot is on Burns Lane and is the back entrance to Tasty Thai restaurant (Green Curry ....Mmmmmm) and the graffiti door below looks like Patch Whisky's work.

I could make the Alternative Doors of Charleston poster to compete with the Doors of Charleston poster.  Trust me. I have the collection.

Boo!

Westies are Besties! These are a few of my favorite things.

Murals of Avondale, Charleston, SC
West Ashley. Is it the name of a place or a description of a location? There has been discussion lately about a meaningful sense of place and management of the rapid growth of the area - west of the Ashley River. I live West Ashley. I walk, I snoop, I revisit favorite spots. I am tickled when I happen upon something new, charming or quirky. This entry visits some of my touchstone spots. I am happy to hear about yours. What do you love about West Ashley?

chART Outdoor Gallery, Avondale, Charleston, SC
The alley of murals behind the shops of Avondale are on my regular walking route. Lining both sides of the narrow drive the chART Outdoor Gallery & Initiative changes frequently and are worth revisiting often.

Coburg Cow, Avondale, Charleston, SC
A rotating cow statue has had a presence on Savannah Highway since the 1920's. We don't even have a Coburg Dairy anymore but the current owners - Borden, agreed to maintain our favorite cow. Our cow has a seasonally updated wardrobe that includes Easter bonnets, festive Spoleto wear, graduation robes and Halloween costumes. When the West Of newsletter awards it's prestigious community award, the trophy is nothing less than a golden cow statue.

Wood Nymph, Middleton Place, Charleston, SC
The beloved Wood Nymph statue at Middleton Plantation Gardens was buried in 1865 to save her from marauding Yankee soldiers and survived the Civil War unscathed. She now sits serenely by the Azalea Pool and must be one of the most frequently photographed statues in the country even if that only counts me. I've recently had my eye on this miniature version for sale in their gift shop.
Birds roosting at Citadel Mall, Charleston, SC
Every spring flocks of birds swoop in and roost in the wetlands next to Citadel Mall Theater. It is a stunning sight. They don't stay long but make a big impression when they are here. Luckily I go to the movies often enough to usually catch them during their visit.

The Adventure, Charles Towne Landing, Charleston, SC

The good ship ADVENTURE is a reproduction of a 17th century coastal trader cargo vessel that would have carried supplies, provisions and livestock between what was then New Amsterdam (now New York) and Barbados in the West Indies. I stop by to say hello every time I visit Charles Towne Landing.

Ivy covered doors, Meditation Garden, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital
I may be biased because it is my work location but this is a beautiful and peaceful spot. The doors set under the grand oaks are almost completely overgrown with ivy now.

Burial spot inside an ancient oak, Magnolia Gardens, Charleston, SC
When the former owner of Magnolia Gardens John Drayton Hastie passed away he was cremated and his remains were put in a box that was tucked inside the trunk of the ancient oak tree. As the tree grows is it gradually covering the opening and sealing him inside the tree.

Ms. Rose's Wall of China, Charleston, SC
I came back to make an addition and may add more! This could turn into a Best of the West entry. When Ms. Rose's restaurant was built they used all the old china and silverware from the previous restaurant to design a wall in the back of the dining area. It is wonderful! I call it Ms. Rose's Fine Wall of China. Order your dinner and then pay a visit to the Wall of China.

These are some of my favorite West Ashley places and things. What are yours?

Joan's Charleston Doors

Rutledge Ave, Charleston, S.C.

Someone has been googling for Charleston doors, so let's take care of that this evening. Larger images found here. This is my alternative to the traditional Charleston Door poster. Enjoy!

Charleston Doors

Meeting St., Charleston, S.C,
It's late and I should be in bed. I worked late this evening and in my mind that already justifies slipping out to get to a movie tomorrow afternoon. I still need to catch Meryl Streep in Iron Lady, doncha think?

Aren't these the most beautiful doors?  They are on lower Meeting St. almost at White Point Gardens. If the doors look like this, I can't even imagine how beautiful the interior is.

I want to thank everyone who has added information about pictures recently in comments and on Facebook. It is so much fun to get more details about a scene I've captured quickly as I go by. Buildings in Charleston have such history and it is lovely for you all to make it more personal for us. Thank you.

G'night kids!

Doors of Charleston

Doors of Charleston, S.C.

When I come across something like this I am almost emotional. Seriously? Someone did this for ME!? Someone I don't even know gave me this gift. Thank you unknown artist.

This won't make it on the artsy Doors of Charleston poster but it is a perfect addition to my collection.

Stay cool kids. It's mighty hot out there. You can follow my walk this morning by the sweat trail.

Charleston Museum - behind the scenes

Charleston Museum - hidden treasures, Charleston, SC
I should be out for my morning walk but wanted to share these pictures before I bundle up and brave the chilly morning. I belong to a Charleston History facebook group and yesterday joined a "behind the scenes" tour of the Charleston Museum. What a treat! First of all it was a joy to put faces to names I've followed online, then it was a chance to get in behind all the closed "staff only" doors that forever tease me. Although housed in different locations through the years the museum was founded in 1773 so you can imagine the incredible assortment of items they have displayed and stored.

Every time a cabinet door was flung open to display shelves full of silver, china and fabrics there was a collective gasp of delight. Members of the group had historical family connections with many of the items and had bits of spicy personal history to add. I'll never look at the Charleston museum in the same way again. Thanks to everyone who helped organize the tour.

Doors of Charleston

Aiken Rhett House, Charleston, S.C.
We have so many beautiful doors in Charleston there are posters made of them. This grand one is at the Aiken Rhett House.

No cleverness from me this evening since I am falling to sleep at my keyboard.
_____________

Hahah....I did fall to sleep at my keyboard! I had a lovely dinner out at The Macintosh for Charleston Restaurant Week with a gaggle of women friends. It is has some of the best food in town in my opinion and restaurant week makes the prices a little easier so I try to take advantage of it.

I am off and running. Y'all have a good Thursday.

Theme Day - Doors

Doors, Society St., Charleston, S.C.

The first day of the month is "theme" day in the City Daily Photo blog community and today's theme is "doors". Click the link to see other pictures on this theme submitted from around the world.

Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

I love these doors. Luckily they are on my route back from the grocery store since it is hard to catch them without a car parked in front of them. I can never decide if a car adds to or detracts from the shot.

Here are a few of my other door shots - not all from Charleston.
