Fresh drinking water

Water fountain at Cannon Park, Charleston, SC
This may have been more important when part of Charleston and the island had water that didn't taste very good. People would fill up their jugs to stock drinking water. Now it is simply a nice fountain. Thanks Herman Bruning!

Fountain scene

Chapel St., Charleston, SC
Charleston has lovely fountains. This one is in a little park on Chapel St.

It's been a busy week for me, kids. We do annual safety updates for all our volunteers so I have been hopping from one hospital to another. One more to go tomorrow. Luckily for me I have a very large team so it takes a little work to get everyone checked off.

It's been a beautiful sunny day in the lowcountry and my azaleas are blooming. It's almost time to order mu bulbs from Caladium World.

Charleston Fountains - Allan Park

Charleston Fountains, Allan Park, Charleston, SC
I parked on Huger St. to meet my friend English for brunch at Harold's Cabin and then walked off the feast by roaming the area. We can continue the recent series of fountain images with this lovely one in tiny Allan Park. This isn't a bad feature to have in your neighborhood and I discovered that Allan Park has it's own facebook page full of information about park activities.
In contrast to nearby Hampton Park, the city’s largest park on the peninsula, Allan Park is one of the smallest. The parcel of land was donated to the City of Charleston by Mrs. Amey Allan, the widow of James Allan and the developer of most of the eastern half of Hampton Park Terrace. City Council had accepted the gift on March 23, 1920, but it was not recorded until August 16, 1921, and includes a term calling for its reversion to the family if ever not used for a park. The first reference to the park appeared in the 1922 City Year Book in a report from the Parks Commission. That year the following report was made:The ground out of which this park was formed was given to the City by Mrs. Jas. Allen (sic), for whom it is named, the physical outline of the Park was proposed by the Supervisor, the actual work was done under contract by the Simons & Mayrant Co., at a cost of $780.00. The Light was donated by the Rubin Electrical Co., which has added much to the beauty of this little Park, which is very much appreciated by the residents in the immediate neighborhood, and makes a very nice spot where children play.\

Charleston Fountains

Fountain, Legare St., Charleston, SC
Recent entries have turned into a series on fountains. Not planned! Some have been water features, others floral and this one on Legare St. is a mixture. What a beautiful yard.

My yard is not on such a grand scale but I am in the midst of improvements! I had gentlemen here today busily working on creating a little flagstone patio for me. Nothing I like more than watching a hustle and bustle of activity while my property is being improved. I can't wait. Neither can the bear.

Charleston Fountains

Fountain, Ladson St., Charleston, SC
I understand it gets a little cooler this weekend and the time change will soon make it seem like fall so I should feature these blossoms before we lose them. I found this pretty fountain on Ladson St.

I slipped out of work early this afternoon for a wedding and the reception was out at one of my favorite places, Magnolia Plantation. Not a bad way to end the week. Happy Friday kids!

Floral fountain

Queen St. fountain, Charleston, SC
We can't complain about losing our blossoms to the season just yet. This beautiful floral fountain is in the yard at Husk Restaurant on Queen St.

Until I clicked on the website to add the link I hadn't realized there will soon be four Husk locations - Charleston, Nashville and soon to come in Savannah and Greenville, Well done Chef Sean Brock.

The Husk building on Queen St. used to be used for art classes for the Gibbes museum of art. I once took a calligraphy class in the same room I have since licked tasty sauce off my fingers and eaten crispy pigs ears in.

Kids, water & laughter

Waterfront Park, Charleston, SC
If this heat continues we might need a map leading us from fountain to fountain.
When this fountain at the waterfront park was first built my children wore their bathing suits under their clothes for most of the summer on the off chance we drove by and they could jump in.

Fountain water with a taste of mystery

Fountain, White Point Gardens, Charleston, SC
It has to be pure! What germ would dare come out of that mouth? Our serpent dragon fountain friend is at the upper part of White Point Gardens offering fresh water with a taste of mystery.

Fountain view for two

College of Charleston campus, Charleston, SC
These two chairs caught my eye on a recent walk through the College of Charleston campus. It looks like someone pulled them up just to sit and enjoy the view. It is a gorgeous spot.

Have I mentioned how much I love Fridays? I do. I made it to Citadel Mall in time for A Walk in the Woods matinee. Apparently I like hiking movies almost as much as I enjoy walking because I go to them all. Sadly my step-counter didn't register any activity during the movie.

Charleston - I love you this much!

White Point Gardens, Charleston, SC
I know I have featured this little gal before but I love her. I visit her every time I walk at White Point Gardens and practically lay on my belly to get a picture of a different angle each time.

Did you have a good week? Did you get all your work done? I had a good week but was rushing like a race horse to get my work done. If you had any idea of the paperwork I have to have completed on every volunteer who works in a hospital you would...I dunno....maybe buy me a candy bar or something. It is completely unreasonable. I have over 350 good spirited folks volunteering and I have to keep current files on each and every one of them. Some days I feel like all I do is feed a data base.

Fountains & Blogging Awards

Fountain, Charleston, S.C.

I am collecting fountains. We'll do a location quiz later. Study up!

Blogging awards. Sigh. What do we think about them? I've won 'em, I liked 'em, but I don't care to get involved with anything that smacks of asking people to participate in a voting frenzy anymore. Luckily this group doesn't have a photo blogging category and I don't mind asking people to vote for YOU!

I received an email yesterday inviting me to vote on a Carolina Blogger Award. Huh? It was the first I've heard of the group. I'm not sure if their blogroll is actually a blogroll or if it is a listing of attendees who have rsvp'd to a blogging luncheon in October but it appears to be primarily a Columbia group with a sprinkling of other areas and ONE from Charleston. It doesn't look like much of a representation of North & South Carolina Bloggers as billed.

So, here is your chance to get included, kids. If you are a blogger, care about awards or want to nominate a blogger this is the nomination link. You do have to have at least a url to vote and you only have until Monday, 9/12. There are a few categories including fashion, political, mommy blog etc. and they require nominations in three categories to count.

If you want to see the lowcountry represented by this group, I have a pretty good directory of lowcountry bloggers on my sidebar for you to explore. Go forth and vote if you are inclined.

Home early

Vanderhorst St., Charleston, S.C.

I love the sight of towels drying over a porch railing. It makes me hope that the occupants are having the perfect lowcountry summer. They should be working a little, studying enough to justify staying in town, spending a lot of time on the beach and yet not keeping me awake all night long (hint, hint).

I ended my day early with a photo op in town that didn't leave enough time to get back to my office so...oooops, I am home early. Walking home I cut through the MUSC shortcut between Ashley and Rutledge and spotted these flowers in the fountain. A lady called out asking if I was the "Charleston blogging lady" and explained that someone regularly left a floral arrangement in the fountain. Nice to meet you Terry! Thanks for saying hello.

Hmmmmph......

White Point Gardens, Charleston, S.C.

It's a bright and sunny lowcountry day and I woke to learn I'd been vandalized. Grrrr. Someone smashed through the wooden fence at the back of my property and completely trashed my backyard. Truth is I heard noise in the night and assumed it was the usual tipsy college students in the yard next to mine.

I've had things stolen from my yard through the years but having someone destroy my property for the pleasure of it is new and unpleasant.

Happy pictures unrelated to entry as usual.
