Teeny, tiny houses - Rockville

Tiny house, Rockville, SC
So tiny I won't be able to have you over for dinner. Sorry about that.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston

Dressed for fall, Charleston, S.C.
This is a sweet addition to the teeny, tiny houses of Charleston series and when I backtracked it looks like I took almost the exact same shot around this time last year. That happens so often I must have annual routines I am not aware of.

I woke up with dreaded cold symptoms this morning so didn't go for my usual walk-about. I went shopping for cold remedies and hoped that everything promising to shorten the length of the misery would take me back to before it started. I know I am not alone with the sniffles at the moment. Bless us all. Achhhoo.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston - F Street

26 F St., Charleston, SC
Here is a wee one for our collection of teeny, tiny houses in Charleston. This is on "F" street off upper King St. and behind the Pancito & Lefty restaurant. It looks like a complete renovation and now for rent for $2,000 a month. Gulp.

The sun in shining and what a treat that is after the daily rain we've been having. I walked the West Ashley Bikeway this morning, ran errands and baked cookies already. Have fun out there kids!

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston

1 Kracke St., Charleston, SC
This is a sweet little renovation on Kracke St. Looking at the side view it isn't so very teeny, tiny after all! Built in 1893 is has three bedrooms and two baths. That would be one more bathroom than I have.

I hope everyone stayed dry and out of traffic jams today. What a mess.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston

Charleston, SC
This is a sweetie in the small house series. Sadly I need help remembering what street it was on. I did a Queen, Tradd loop that day. I noted it was 88 1/2 but didn't remember what street. I always assume I will remember everything. Foiled again.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston - Line St.

Line St., Charleston, SC
I walked the line this morning - Line St. that is. I did this route last weekend in the dripping rain while today is warm and sunny. Adding to our series of tiny dwelling are these Freedman's cottages. Looking for information on these traditional Charleston cottages I discovered that there is actually a book about them. What a fun book to research.

The Charleston "Freedman's Cottage": An Architectural Tradition
Charleston’s “freedman’s cottages” are some of the most understudied and undervalued vernacular buildings in the city, found as far south as Council Street and as far north as North Charleston. Though these cottages have long been associated with African American history and culture, they in fact extend much further into the history and development of Charleston and deserve to be studied and understood. The predominant theory is that these tiny houses, often no larger than five hundred square feet, were constructed by and for freed slaves after the Civil War, due to a rising need for inexpensive housing. Who occupied these houses over time? What were their lives like? Most of them were ordinary citizens to whom we can all relate. Each one of these houses has at least a hundred stories to tell, many of which have been uncovered and recounted here.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston

Stoll's Alley, Charleston, SC
This may not be a genuine tiny house since on second glance it appears to be attached to the main building but it is close enough to count today. Truthfully with everything that has been going I haven't felt inclined to post so I'll stick to a sweet little house image and a sign that I spotted shortly after taking this shot.

Meanwhile, be nice to each other, kids.

Teeny, tiny houses - Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island, SC
The dreamy little cottages that catch my eye don't always have the most charming histories.
In the lowcountry they were often slave cabins and that is exactly what this one on Pawleys Island was. The main house is called the LaBruce Lemon House and was built in 1858. There is a bit of history below and we are lucky - since the property is a holiday rental there are images of all the rooms in the house on this real estate page. What a fun tour!

Many thanks to my day-trip partner in crime who pulled to a screeching halt for my photo op.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston - Spring St.

Spring St., Charleston, SC
I had to resist the urge to straighten out this image because this tiny old house on Spring St. isn't straight to begin with. What a fun little cottage.

The rain from tropical storm Bonnie continued today enough to throw off any major long weekend plans. Blah. I actually did some chores, changed my air filter, hung a picture and bought groceries. How boring is that? Luckily the evening ended on a high note with a home cooked Italian dinner with lots of laughter and good friends.

Teeny, tiny houses

Sutherland Ct., Charleston, SC
Here are a couple of little cuties in the smaller scale. I walked the area around Hampton Park on Sunday and spotted them on that tiny cut through street off of Huger. The top one needs some luvin'.

What a beautiful day! I had mid-day meetings at the Mount Pleasant Hospital so got out of the office and enjoyed the freedom. It is crisp and cool at the moment and I am back on my walking routine. I had been sidetracked by a couple of sprains and heel pain but marching onward again.

TV is so dreadful now that I get so sad when I finish a series I enjoy on Netflix. It feels like I will never find anything I care about enough to watch again and then, bingo I find something. This time I latched on to The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Fun stuff. It is a change from my recent streak of Nordic detective and police reporter shows.

Teeny, tiny houses

Rockville, SC
The latest addition to my teeny, tiny house series may be cheating just a bit but isn't it a cutie?! And it is a real Charleston style single house. I spotted this model home in the village of Rockville.

It's been a good weekend although I had to keep changing plans to stay a step ahead of predictions of rain. Turns out it mainly rained in the night and the days have been lovely, fresh and cool. I shouldn't have listened to the weathermen at all. Now, as is my custom I am trying to do all my weekend chores in the last hour. Blah.

Teeny, Tiny Houses of the Lowcountry

Walterboro, SC

I don't know that it was ever actually a home but it is a cute little cottage. I cracked the door open and saw an old Santa's Workshop sign. Don't get your hopes up, kids. It looks like Santa may have moved on although he left his red rocker on the porch.

This little cottage is behind the SC Artisan's Center shop down the road in Walterboro.

Checking their website I see that Walterboro claims to be the Front Porch of the Lowcountry and their symbol is the red rocking chair. So there you have it!

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston - Drake St.

Drake St., Charleston, SC
Another rainy day in Charleston with the usual flooded streets. I was lucky enough to switch one meeting across town into a conference call, stayed snug in my office with a mug of tea and still got the job done.

I had this picture from my weekend walk saved to share and add to my collection of tiny houses. It is a sweetie. Below you can see it in proportion to it's larger neighbor.

Teeny, tiny tree houses

McClellanville, SC
McClellanville is a dreamy little town. Grab a book and a pillow and come on up.

Teeny, tiny houses of the lowcountry

Tiny cottage, Bluffton, SC
This one is a cutie to add to our collection of teeny, tiny houses. I spotted it behind an impressive mansion in Bluffton. I spotted a steam of maids going in to clean the main house but it wouldn't take much to keep this little sweetie in order.

I am fat and full after a giant Fish Pie at Madra Rua and I have plenty of leftovers for tomorrow.

My favorite garden: Free admission to Magnolia will be offered on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, to active duty military personnel and their immediate family. This gift to those who serve America only applies to the general garden admission and not the separate tours of the house, swamp garden, nature boat, nature train and "Slavery to Freedom" program. Valid active duty identification is required.

Now I get to settle in and watch the last David Letterman show since I didn't stay up that late last night.

Teeny, tiny houses - fixer-up edition

Round O, S.C.
It was a beautiful day yesterday but a harsh light for photographs. You know I like to capture teeny, tiny houses but I am guessing this one isn't "move in ready". I found this little cottage in Colleton County around the community of Round O.

Yes, seriously, there is a place called Round O.This is what Wikipedia has to say about the name:

Round O (formerly also called Round).

Hahah! Ya think people kept wondering what was round so they had to add the "O"?

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston

Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC
It is probably some kind of garden or guest house rather than a tiny home but it is small and different. I'll need to check back and update when the grounds are finished.

Teeny, tiny houses of the lowcountry

Drayton Hall privy, Charleston, S.C.
I have a little brick sweetie to add to our collection of teeny, tiny houses of Charleston. Tin roof, fireplace. I am ready to move it. One catch - this particular wee cottage was actually the privy or outhouse for the much larger mansion. We are still going to do it in style since the framed sketch inside shows that it was a seven-seater! Call your friends. We have room for everyone. Yikes.

The fireplace was added later when it was used as an office.

Teeny, tiny houses of Charleston

Charleston, S.C.
This is a favorite and I stop to say hello to the little pink house each time I pass. It appears uninhabited and in need of some tender loving care.

It is late and I should be snug in my bed. This is my first day back in the office after a few days away so spent catching up with emails, voice mails, notes under my door and on my door. I had an order of Charleston sweetgrass baskets waiting for me from a friend at work. They cost so much but are so lovely and I have a connection if anyone needs any for gifts. Let me know and I will put you in touch.

Teeny, Tiny Houses of Charleston

Bull St., Charleston, S.C.
This little cottage at 74 Bull is one of a matching pair on either side of a much grander residence. It is a little cutie. It seems to be rented as a two bedroom unit. I couldn't get a good shot of the one on the other side without.....ahem, trespassing.
