Storm Sewer Babe

Storm Sewer Drain Cover, Charleston, S.C.
Not too shabby for a storm sewer drain cover.

Many years ago I fell in one down by White Point Gardens. The round over was loose and I was marching along quickly. I stepped on it, it flipped up and I fell in. I had nasty gashes on my legs and was lucky I didn't break both of them. I was able to get out and when I got home I called the city to report it so it wouldn't happen to someone else. A lady answered the phone and with a lazy drawl said, "you sound like you're alright". Yup. I could have snapped both my legs off but because I could talk she wasn't impressed.

I've been a little wary of these sewer covers ever since but this is a pretty one.

Joan, doesn't the word Carolopolis have something to do with the fire department years and years ago?

It looks quite distinctive.

This might be the nicest storm sewer cover that I can remember.

What a freak accident. I am amazed that the city worker was so uncaring.

Stay clear of storm sewer covers,
They do tend to flip,
And if you are not careful
You might just take a dip!

Janie, you made me curious! I knew it was the name of the award that the Preservation Society gives to renovated properties so did some looking around. This is what I found: "Carolopolis is the Latin name of the City of Charleston (although, strictly speaking, polis is a Greek word). The city's Latin motto, "aedes mores juraque curat," means "she cares for her temples, customs, and laws."

Interesting. I didn't find anything to do with the fire department though.

I think it is rather pretty.

It is attractive!

It was rather startling at the time. I was just trying to prevent it from happening to anyone else but they didn't even seem to care where it was. One employee sure can damage a department's reputation.

Good one!

Do you remember? I sure hope it has been fixed! You have now added a new item to my list of fears. I was already freaky about the grates on the sidewalks. Sigh.
