Roots & Shoots Native Plant Nursery opens

Roots & Shoots, Wappoo Rd., Charleston, SC
Roots & Shoots Native Plants & Fruits nursery opened in their new location on Wappoo Rd. in my part of town this morning. Yipee!

I wasn't the only one who got their promptly but I did a quick in and out before my wallet had too much damage. I needed to talk to someone about some ground cover for a trouble spot and brought home a few plants to try. Welcome to West Ashley!

Art in the park - West Ashley Greenway

West Ashley Greenway, Charleston, SC
I have been eagerly awaiting planned improvements to the West Ashley Greenway and Bikeway. I'd heard that a new site specific scuplture had been installed and made a point to walk down to see it. It is odd looking - tanks joined together but the opening invites you climb in and look up to see the colorful view. More to come I hope!

Cemetery Walking

Sycamore Rd., Charleston, SC
Uhoh. It looks like I have been a slacker in the blogging department. I've been keeping up on facebook though, so hang out with me there if you are a participant.

I am still walking as much as I can, aiming for the 10,000 step goal. I don't make it every night but it's good to have a goal. In fact, I started old lady zumba class again no matter how uncoordinated I am.

I took this picture of the Jewish cemetery on Sycamore Rd. on last nights walk. I have good friends resting behind those walls.

The Longest Table - West Ashley

The Longest Table, West Ashley, Charleston, SC
I live in a community that is dealing with growth, traffic and flooding issues but has a strong sense of community which was very evident last Saturday when we joined together for lunch at one of The Longest Table events to encourage discussion and friendship. Local leaders and police officers joined residents for a delicious lunch which was prepared by the West Ashley culinary students. It was a very successful event. Many thanks to our coordinators and volunteers!

Greenway Decor

West Ashley Greenway, Charleston, SC
Charleston Moves rallied volunteers to paint colorful designs on intersections of the West Ashley Greenway this weekend. Besides the happy color it is hoped that it will hope slow down motorists. Thank you to everyone involved. I enjoyed a perfect Greenway walk visiting each site.

Duck for donuts!

Duck Donuts, Charleston, SC
We still get a little excited when a new restaurant or eatery opens West Ashley and Duck Donuts has caused a bit of a stir! I was meeting friends for coffee on Sullivan's Island this morning and stopped by to pick up the Halloween assortment to take with me. They were a hit! The fresh warm base donut is the same but they are then dipped into the different flavored frostings and toppings.

Run West Ashley, Run!

West Ashley Greenway, Charleston, SC
The Avondale 5K was held this morning but instead of running past my house, they directed the runners to a section of the West Ashley Bikeway. I hope the stretches of uneven pavement and root systems weren't a problem because it was a lovely scene seeing them come out of the woods. Congrats to all!

Pull right up, my friends. Boo!

Halloween Mural, Charleston, SC
Pull right up, my friends. We've saved you a spot.

Yikes!

Mural artist Douglas Panzone is painting a new mural on DB's Cheesesteaks at the corner of Savannah Highway and Avondale Avenue in anticipation of the premier of the Halloween movie staring Jamie Lee Curtis and filmed locally, opening this month.

Sky drama

West Ashley Cancer Center view, Charleston, SC
These summer days of rain do bring dramatic skies in between the cloudbursts. I grabbed this shot with my cell phone through the window of the West Ashley Cancer Center. The porch is rarely used but patients are welcome to enjoy the space and it overlooks the meditation garden.

Stay dry kids! I did make it out for a late walk and got my 11,224 steps. Hello recliner my old friend.

Neighborhood Plant Sale

Roots & Shoots Plant Sale, Charleston, SC
A neighborhood native plant sale right in my neighborhood! How about that?! My friend Maria tipped me off and since my alternate plans changed I went up to check it out and came back with a few treats. Yesterday was payday after all. I figure if they are native plants and he grows them well a few blocks from my house, perhaps they will do well in my yard.

Play me a tune!

White Key Studio, Highway 61, Charleston, SC
I pass this piano on the side of the street with musical instruments dangling from the tree every day on my way to work and intended to wander up and take a picture. When my niece Bonita and her fiance were visiting I suggested they pose in place and that improved the shot 100%!

After I posted the shot online someone asked where it was and the next day I drove by and say a model posing on top of the piano. At the moment the piano has a new brighter life in brilliant colored paint. What a fun signature for a music studio!

The business is White Key Studio which offers music lessons and a recording studio on Highway 61

Easter Bonnet

Coburg Cow, Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC
When I am having a lazy weekend morning and looking for a shorter exercise route I sometimes park at Harris Teeter grocery store and walk the greenway path through to South Windermere. This morning I backtracked to grab a shot of the Coburg Cow statue dressed for the season in her Easter Bonnet. Thanks to the owners for keeping up this fun tradition of themed holiday wear.

After an iced coffee break at Earthfare - almost the only store open in the usually lively shopping center I headed back. It feels like a reasonable walk but only logged under 6,000 steps.

Colorful wheels in Avondale

Colorful wheels, Avondale, Charleston, SC
This looks like one of Patch Whisky's murals behind the Mellow Mushroom restaurant in Avondale. It was a bright splash of color only improved by the scooter parked in front of it.

I only caught the shot because I went out marching the very minute I got home from work to get my walk in before dark. I'm not a fan of this daylight saving time.

Avondale mural update

Avondale Murals, Charleston, SC
This morning's walk took me behind the shops at Avondale so I was able to update my mural collection. Carry on folks! You delight me.

A healthy start to the weekend

Avondale 5K 2017, Charleston, SC
The Avondale 5K ran right past my house this morning. I didn't even have to walk to the run to grab a shot. I believe they took care of my exercise obligations for the weekend. Thanks team!

Ahoy there!

Magnolia Rd., Charleston, SC
It must be October! I spotted this boat boarding and ready to take off on Magnolia Road last night as I walked down to Avondale for a quick bite at Gala Desserts (desserts, tapas, paninis and wine).  On my return I was lucky to catch Daniel D. in action on the lawn by the Schoolhouse as part of the MOJA festival. What a treat!
