Sharing the Lowcountry Link Love

Charleston, S.C.
I have a couple of links to share this evening:

An article on Why Charleston is America's Favorite City by Christian L. Wright for Conde Naste Traveler.

Gorgeous photography at Lowcounty Scenes by Photographer Mic Smith available for purchase directly from his web site. We know it is beautiful here but Mic sure knows how to capture a mood in a photo. Wow.

Keep up with what is going on in the Lowcounty at Holy City Sinner - We're Good Guys but we can't be Good Every Night.

Charleston Grit.  Bold. Smart. Local. Now. Charleston Magazine's blogging neighborhood! Check it out. They even use some of my photos. What incredible taste :)!

Now, I got home too late to walk so I need to get on my rowing machine and row across the lake in my living room. I'll soon be able to challenge you all to arm wrestling matches. Behave, kids!

Tuesday evening hodge podge

Charleston, S.C.
I put myself in Isolation at work today. I taped a sign on my door saying, "Joan has a cold. Enter at your own risk" and tried to stay inside my office. I'd like to be done with these sniffles by tomorrow please.

Check out this recipe for Champagne Marshmallows. Oh my. Or this one for Salmon Bisque.

Isn't it a shame to cut off bright hibiscus blossoms to wrap the branches against this cold night? I hope I didn't wait too long.

Criggo. Always a smile.

Exploding Flowers. Pretty.

Charleston Magazine put the link up to my article. Smile!

Stay warm, kids!

Nice bit of fence with the upside down hearts. I think it was Chalmers St. Another shot to add to my hearts album.

Charleston Insideout wrote a lovely post about coming home to Charleston.

The Accidental Cootchie Mama wants advice on the perfect gift for parents. What do you think?

Book of Joe, the world's best blogging anesthesiologist found this cute little disco ball key chain iPod speakers. Do I need one of these? A key chain, a speaker, a mini disco ball - all in one! Maybe I do.

Mental Meatloaf found some cool door shots in NYC.

It's lovely that it stays light so long these days but boy could we use some rain.

New Board of Charming & Quirky

St. Philip & Line St., Charleston, S.C.

Charleston has a Board of Architectural Review that reviews changes to historic building but after seeing scaffolding in front of another one of my old favorite hand painted signs, I hereby declare the establishment of the Board of Charming & Quirky.

Folks, you are simply going to need to apply before you paint over signs that are so much part of the character of the lowcounty. I LOVE the hand painted "Home of the Hand Wash" sign. Aren't there days when we could all use a gentle hand wash?

It looks like we are all going to have to get up and go to work tomorrow after all. I've been loving all the rapture jokes and photos.

Anyone else find the Charleston Farmer's Market so packed that it isn't much fun anymore? I used to love the market but now it is almost impossible to walk through the aisles, food lines are too long and hoping to find a place to sit down for a bite is out of the question. Can the stalls be spread out a bit, please? Pretty please? I do like my fresh tomatoes and peaches but lately the whole thing just makes me cranky.

Charleston Girl painted the Folly boat for her wedding announcement! It's been a long, long time since I've done that.

Suzie visited one of my old haunts - Magnolia Cemetery.

Friskies has made an iPad game for cats. Why not!

Spoleto Festival tickets are out. Whew. Hard to believe it is that time of year already.

Maybe I am wrong. Maybe they are repairing and repainting the Home of the Hand Wash sign. Have a good week kids!

I was so excited to learn that the new Boeing plant in North Charleston will cover it's roof with solar panels and will be entirely powered with renewable energy. Thanks Boeing!

Photographer Jeffery Stoner made a recent trip to the lowcountry and added some photos to his gallery: Jeffrey Stoner Fine Art Photography

The garden photos were taken through a gate on Legare St. Thanks to all of you who send me ideas for photos and emails responding to something I've mentioned. I love hearing from you. Forgive me for not always responding immediately.

Like "Foodie Porn"? Tartelette is donating $20 from each print sold between Match 15 - April 15 to disaster recovery efforts in Japan. Check out her Etsy shop Tartelette by Tartellete shop to see the prints. Drool worthy.

Congrats to Holly from Venti Chocolate Mocha who is a Forty Under 40 winner.

Quixotic RIE has been featuring interviews with artists: The Artist Life.

Curious about the Maasai warrior who helped lead the Walk for Water? I was. He is an Ambassador Exchange student at Clemson working on his Master's degree. Here is the scoop. And, yes, he did kill a lion with that spear.

Someone with a sense of humor hacked into the highway sings near Fort Mill near the South Carolina/North Carolina border. The wording was changed to warn drivers to watch for zombies, hunters and tanks. On Sunday morning, the sign read "Zombies Ahead" and then flashed "Watch for Hunters." On the other side of the road, a sign warned motorists to "Be alert for Tanks."

I always enjoy A Tidewater Gardener's photography but this month he invited readers to take pictures of their daily winter walks (sounds like my life, eh!) He just blogged their entries with links to photos. Enjoy!

G'night kids. I've got a big week ahead. Turn the lights out.

Lowcountry Blog Hopping

Party in the sky! Charleston, S.C.

I found another cool lowcountry blogger Vanessa K. who visited a gourd farm in Ridge Spring, S.C.

Second Sunday on King St., reminds us that Sunday is the Second Sunday on King St. The street is closed to all vehicular traffic from 1:00 to 5:00 pm from Calhoun to Queen. Eat, drink and be merry while you stroll freely down the street.

Congratulations to Hungry Meets Healthy who won the Charleston City Paper's award for Best Local Interest Blog category this year. I've won before so I know how much fun it is! Yipee!

Ho, ho, ho....Closed for Business is now open for brunch.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra is celebrating St. Patrick's day on March 19th with Eileen Ivers and the Immigrant Soul. I bought the cheapo tickets.

I love it that restaurant critic and wanton food whisperer Holly Herrick's mother painted the cover of her new book for her. That is almost as cool as having a new book on tarts with a fabulous cover photographed by Helene DuJardin. Here is the actual book cover image. The book will be available in September. Yum.

Speaking of books, Heather Solos from Home Ec 101 has a book out as well! Check here for a sneak peak.

Fish Restaurant is having a Mixology Dinner on April 8th featuring Evan Powell's cocktails and Nico Romo's cuisine! 3 courses plus passed hors d'oeuvres. $45. Call 843.722.3474 to make your reservations!

Gotta go kids, it's late and School of Rock is on tv.

Eat More Curry

Statue, Charleston, S.C.

I walked the streets named after women on Sunday morning - Charlotte, Judith, Mary, Elizabeth and stuck the camera through a fence to get this picture. I believe it was Charlotte and Alexander.

I was home a little early today to meet Greg from Terminex for my annual pest treatment to the house (well worth every penny) and had the tv on at an unusual time for me. Dr. Oz was talking about Alzheimer's - current thinking about this dreadful disease and what we might do to prevent it.

Besides physical activity and a health diet, the thing that might actually make a difference? Eating curry. He recommended eating curry twice a week. Once again, I waited long enough for research to come up with something I like. More curry!

Dr. Oz - Eat Curry to Prevent Alzheimer's: At the very end of the segment, Dr Oz said that one of the best ways to ward off Alzheimer's is to eat curry. He suggested that everyone eat two servings of curry each week.

Oldify me baby!

Forsyth Park, Savannah, GA

On a recent trip to Savannah I left Forsyth Park when Civil War reenactors were setting up for battle. It struck on me that this would be a perfect picture for the "antique" generator.

It is, isn't it?!

Go on, try one for yourself. Hint: tourists in shorts ruin the antique effect. Upload a photo, click the box under the photo and post what you come up with so we can come see. It isn't in English but you can figure it out.

My evening walk

Cannon St., Charleston, S.C.

I took the wide angle lens out to stretch it's legs and did the Bee, President, Cannon, King St. loop. I had to walk past Roper Hospital to get a picture of the reflection garden that the volunteers funded while it is in bloom.

Check out the steam punk trunk Mental Meatloaf created, say hello and make friends. She wins the coolest commenter award each year.

Ummm....guess I'll need to come up with an award now. How can I top the Absinthe Chocolates folks send her from Scotland? What's good from the Lowcountry?

Sharing the Link Love

Pinopilos, S.C.

Unrelated to the cute little building in Pinopolis, here are a couple of things that made me smile this week:

South Carolina can't seem to stay out of the news lately. Don't mess with our spareribs!

Another funny one: Prenatal Ultrasonographer's jobs are getting easier!

Bird on a wire. This is so cool.

Funniest Pacifier. Heheh.

Greatest Hits of You Tube in 4 Minutes. I hate to admit I've seen most of them.

Climbing wall at James Island County Park. I don't think so. No.

Awwww........look, you can get sock monkey embroidery patterns for sewing machines. Coolness.

My brother Jim has finally started a blog. He was born in the hills of north east India and leads eco/adventure travel. Go say hey! Actually, go say "Khublei" which is the proper greeting in the Khasi hills country.

I love weekends. Hope yours is sweet.

Interesting Link

Pink House, Chalmers St., Charleston, SC

Quick entry to share a link I happened upon to the World Traveler's Blog - an account of a solo ride around the world by bicycle by a young Danish gentleman.

Wow. Wish I'd known he was coming through town. In this entry he was in Charleston and took a nice set of pictures. I always enjoy seeing familiar scenes through a visitor's eyes.
