Asleep in a tree

Magnolia Plantation Gardens, Charleston, S.C.

See the dark spot in the ancient oak tree? That is the final resting place of the former owner of Magnolia Plantation. John Drayton Hastie's remains are inside a container that is tucked inside the oak tree that was  planted by his ancestor three centuries ago.

Each year it seems to disappear a little more until soon, I imagine he will be completely enclosed within the tree. Not a bad resting place.

  1. Very interesting, and very cool. I want to (eventually) be creamated, but I hadn't thought about the tree thing. I just visualized my ashes being spread overlooking a majestic mountain range or something.

    *thinking*

    1. I assume they knew it wouldn't hurt the tree. I don't know how deep the container went. It might be quite shallow. I love the idea in this case.

  2. Hey Joan - cool story, but for some reason the photos are only showing up as small black lines - can't see the pictures at all. Anyone else?
