Peach time!

Peaches, Eutawville, SC
It is that magical time of year - when delicious peaches are sold at roadside market stands. The St. Julien booth is finally open with tomatoes, corn and peaches for sale. I am enjoying a perfect peach right this moment.

Farmer's market time!

Gruber Farms - Veggie Stand, St. George, SC
Hip, hip hurrah for Farmer's Market stands! This one is on Hwy 15 heading towards St. George, SC and was a happy sight. What a treat to get fresh vegetables. I happened to need a couple of zucchinis for a blueberry cake recipe that has been floating around facebook recently and it is in the oven at this very moment. Fingers crossed.

The Gruber property also has the three tiny rental cottages from a time when it was a major traffic thoroughfare. They are still rented and over 60 years old. I had noticed them before put purchasing a few vegetables felt like permission to grab a photo op. The owners even moved their truck so I could get a clear shot of the adorable cottages.

An egg in the hand is worth two in the pan

Fresh farmer's market eggs, Charleston, SC
Oh noooooo, half of my precious weekend has already slipped away. I read that there was a new Farmer's Market open on upper King St. where the new Workshop restaurant is and since I wanted to check it out anyway I went to market this morning. There was a long stretch of vendors set up and lots of cheerful activity and children running about. I bought fresh eggs and as the farmer was packing them up I noticed the size of the eggs on display. Huge! There were chicken eggs but must have been at least double yolks.

It was a lovely space and market and plenty of parking. So nice in fact I hope to go back tomorrow to eat at the Workshop.
Pacific & Crate Farmer's Market: The Upper King multi-use space is entering the farmers market game beginning Sat. Sept. 30 and running through November. According to a press release, the new event is the work of Michael Shemtov's Butcher & Bee team. Shemtov owns and operates Pacific Box & Crate's food court, Workshop and the farmers market is all a part of his brand's "commitment to working with 'Honest to Goodness' local purveyors."
The Saturday market will run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include Lowland Farms, Spade & Clover, Green Grocer, Storey Farms, Dalai Sofia Kombucha, Counter Cheese Caves, Butcher & Bee, Tarvin Seafood, Lowcountry Flower Growers to get things started.

On the road - Florence, SC

Julia Belle's, Florence, SC
My weekend day trip was to Florence, SC and googling a place for lunch we drove directly to the Florence Farmer's Market and had lunch at Julia Belle's. I was amazed at the size of the Farmer's Market building. It was large enough for cars to drive right through the building and pull up to park under the shed.

Besides the usual produce in the building there was another huge structure with antiques and thrift items so big that it was divided into sections by rooms - living room goods, bedroom furniture and so on. Sadly for me, my house is tiny and if I bring home anything new, something old must go.

We made a stop in the historic area that is under renovation and admired the shops and Hotel Florence but not for long. The skies opened and rain put a stop to our downtown exploration. Thanks for a nice visit Florence!

West Ashley Farmer's Market

Woohoo! Finally. I moved West Ashley a couple of years ago and now I am ready for all the good stuff to come to me.
