After the fire - Smith St.

It is shocking to see the skeleton remains of these historic wooden houses after a fire. I'd heard about the fire on Smith St. but it was a different thing to walk by and see the sad ruins. It burned in mid July on a day that had a heat index of 101 degrees. Four fire fighters need to be treated and one lady was missing a kitty.

Gadsden St. Fire

It is always shocking to see the damage a house fire can do to these grand old homes. What a sad loss. According to the Post & Courier article twelve people were displaced from their apartments.

Searching for more details I discovered that Twenty Six Divine is holding a Gadsden St. Fire Relief Party on Sunday afternoon for a few of the residents.

Katie Seley and Robert Gibb lost their home and all of their belongings in the Gadsden Street Fire that occurred on May 11. Seley is a longtime employee at Twenty Six Divine, so to help the couple rebuild their lives, the owners of Twenty Six Divine are pulling the community together to throw a party that will raise funds for Seley and Gibb. Enjoy braised pork and chicken tacos, pineapple-jalapeno mimosas, pastries, libations from The Recovery Room, music by Moonlight Ale, and art from Alicia Penn. All proceeds go to the couple.

Seven historic riverfront buildings burned down in Georgetown at the end of September. I'd driven through since then but last weekend was the first time I walked by and saw first hand the terrible loss they suffered. These pictures are taken from the waterfront boardwalk.

Georgetown is a lovely town and I hope their downtown can bounce back from this disaster. It is the perfect day trip from Charleston and still a good place to visit.

Fire at Bogard & Rutledge

I can't even imagine waking up to this but luckily someone did wake up and got everyone else out. No one was hurt although I'm sure they lost almost everything. The Post & Courier site has a lot more photos here. Fire is always a worry with these old wooden houses.

Roadside Fire

Usually when you see smoke ahead of you on the road it turns out to be a farmer burning leaves at the roadside but not in this case. The unfortunate couple said they pulled over when they noticed smoke coming from from under the hood and in moments the whole vehicle was in full flames. They couldn't believe their eyes.

Thank goodness the passengers got out safely. Firefighters were in the scene in minutes and had the blaze under control. This happened on Old Gaillard Rd. not too far from Eutawville.

In other news - yeah, I am back online! The Comcast gentleman just left after replacing my modem. Once they actually get here they are very nice and helpful. It's getting to them that makes me completely insane.
