Walking Quotes

Colonial Lake, Charleston, SC

There are times when I have to take, I call it a 'silence bath',
where I shut off all the external gadgets.
I go walk around, talk to people, and just live life for a while.
Patton Oswalt

Walking Quotes

Queen St., Charleston, SC
The last Friday of the year and a pay day. Bingo! I came home from work, ordered pizza and crashed. This a delicious no-man's land week in between Christmas and New Years with no meetings scheduled and time to catch up, close out and get ready for the new year. I interviewed three terrific new hospital volunteer applicants today so it was well worth being in the office.

I did not go for one of my long walks this evening but fully intend to keep up the practice in 2018 as long as my legs will carry me. I am sharing this quote about walking:

Old Pitt St. bridge walking

Old Pitt St. Bridge, Mt. Pleasant, SC
I stopped at BiLo on the way home from a funeral visitation to find the cold and flu remedy shelves ransacked and in disarray. Apparently I'm not the only one who got the sniffles for Christmas. Achooo. Netflix and chill for the rest of the evening.

I did drag myself out to walk this morning aiming to get a picture of the controversial mural at Moes. It is very cool and I hope they don't make them take it down. I got the mural shot, walked the boardwalk at Shem Creek, roamed old Mt. Pleasant and then hiked down to the old Pitt St. bridge. For a sniffling gal I got my steps in for the day.

The Old Pitt Street Bridge was once the trolley trestle connecting Mt. Pleasant to Sullivan's Island in the late 1920's. It closed when the Ben Sawyer bridge opened in 1945. Now the spot is an attractive park area and popular for fishing, crabbing, bird-watching and strolling.

Charleston Scenes

Charleston, S.C.
I have my hands full this week kids, so here are a few pictures from a recent weekend morning walk in Charleston. Enjoy!

State Street greenery

State St., Charleston, S.C.
This is one of the prettiest stretches of street in Charleston and I can't resist grabbing a shot when I go by.

I took this on Saturday which was lucky since it is pouring rain at the moment and the weather might mess with my evening walk.  This was national Walk at Lunch day so I did squeeze in a brisk march around the hospital campus at lunch which equals about a mile. This staying fit business is time consuming isn't it?  I've tried to get back in the routine of going to a zumba class but missed last night because I had forty kids learning about Obstetrical careers at Mount Pleasant Hospital.

At least it is staying light later so it is more tempting to get back outside after my initial post work crash and burn. Stay healthy my friends.

Spring Break Charleston Style

Blue Bicycle Books, King St., Charleston, S.C.
Blue Bicycle Books window display stays current with the passing of time but it doesn't keep sleeping kitty awake.

Uhoh. Luckily tomorrow is National Walking Day because I was a slacker this evening. I did do a quick mile loop around the hospital during my break this afternoon but couldn't make myself get back out this evening until it was much too late and dark.

“Walkers are 'practitioners of the city,' for the city is made to be walked. A city is a language, a repository of possibilities, and walking is the act of speaking that language, of selecting from those possibilities. Just as language limits what can be said, architecture limits where one can walk, but the walker invents other ways to go.”

Walking Speed Predicts Life Expectancy

Warren St., Charleston, S.C.

How fast you walk may predict life expectancy. Now, here is a study I like!

I've always walked fast because I walked to actually get somewhere. It sounds like a "grumpy old man" story but I really did walk three miles each way to high school. We took short cuts through the woods and climbed hills and were still faster than the pokey bus route.

I don't know how to amble or stroll. You need to tie a rope around my belly and hold me back if you plan on a lazy walk with me. One of the hardest things about having small children and toddlers was never being able to take a brisk stride without picking them up and carrying them.

I am always so pleased to find people who match my pace. According to this study, I should live a long time - unless I break a leg first.

The little people left their toys out

John St., Charleston, S.C.

The little people left their toys out. Check the larger version.

In other news, you know I am a walking nut. I grew up walking miles every day. I march briskly and endlessly around the Charleston peninsula with the odd field trip through swamps and cemeteries. I've spent vacations hiking across countries. On occasion I like to share good walking quotes and thoughts by my fellow walkers.

Here is an article on walking that I spotted in the Guardian UK yesterday:

Drip, drip...

Charleston, S.C.

Everything is dripping today. The sky, my nose.....

I took one more day off since I still sound so congested. Tomorrow I have to go to work so perhaps I'll just put a Quarantine sign on my door and get a lot done.

My gift for you today is a link to a self guided Charleston walking tour. This one is on a real estate page but it looks pretty good. You can print it out and tuck it in your pocket next time you are walking the historic district.
