Palmetto Roses

Palmetto Roses, Charleston, SC
Even palmetto roses lose their bloom.

It's Friday kids! I didn't make to my usual Friday afternoon matinee so hit the recliner with
potato pancakes and a few episodes of Orange is the New Black. Such an exciting life I lead. Heheh.
It has been a busy week and I am perfectly happy.

Palmetto Rose

Palmetto Rose, Charleston, SC
Sometimes I suspect people scamper in front of me leaving a trail of things for me to find on my walk. Well done. I found it!

Here is a bit of history on the Palmetto Rose.

In honor of a favorite

Brick inscription, King St., Charleston, S.C.
Someone liked their dog well enough to pay for a brick inscription. The same person liked their whiskey enough to name their dog after it. I found a row of pet inscriptions on King St. The streets were closed to traffic on Sunday so I could actually look down without getting run over.

I'm not saying I made the best potato soup in the world this evening but it was darned good and I am full. Yum.

Here are some palmetto roses for you nice folks. Enjoy! I gave him all the change I had left to take the photo since I didn't actually want a rose.

Palmetto Rose Hood Ornament

Palmetto Rose Hood Ornament, Charleston, S.C.
This suited the setting. I spotted the Palmetto Rose wrapped around the hood ornament in the parking lot at Magnolia Plantation when I was leaving the Autumn Festival. Master Gardeners were in attendance to give advice about Lowcountry plants and I came home with arms full of $2 azaleas cuttings. This was the perfect last picture of the afternoon.

A Love Afair with Your Camera

Palmetto Roses, Charleston, S.C.

I've had a post ready the last two nights and nodded off with my laptop. Zzzzz.

My fried Charlotte sent me a link to B & H Photo's: Seven Ways You Know You Have a Love Affair With Your Camera. some of them and the added comments are pretty funny:

  • One of your social-networking profile pictures is of you with your camera. In said photo, you tag the camera as "My Precious."

  • When you don't have your camera on you, people always ask, "Where is your camera?" as if you had a terrible tragedy happen to you as of late. Because of this, you are usually the photographer amongst friends and family.

  • You get nightmares about a terrible accident happening to your camera.

  • Your wardrobe choice is determined partially by how you'll be able to carry your camera: whether it is with a strap around your chest, stored in a coat pocket, or in a stylish camera bag.

  • On really cold days you keep it in the bag when you are indoors so that it'll stay warmer longer when you go outside and on really sunny days you put polarizers on it like sun glasses. You keep the cover off the lens as much as possible, because it wants to see the world also!

  • You worry more about your camera getting cold, wet, and dirty than you do about yourself.

  • You buy your camera presents, extra batteries, accessories, etc...

A Rose is a Rose, is a Rose....

Hutson St., Charleston, S.C.
Palmetto Rose Legend: It is said that during the War Between the States Confederate Soldiers went off to war wearing Palmetto Roses woven by their sweethearts in South Carolina.

Tourists can't go far in Charleston's historic district without being approached by young boys offering to sell them a palmetto rose. It became a problem with home owners concerned about boys with knives trespassing on private property to climb palmetto trees to cut the fronds needed to make the roses.

Now-a-days the kids take an after-school entrepreneurship class, learn basic business skills, get a license and run their own business. This summer the Palmetto Artisan Program program won an award at the US Conference of Mayor's city livability awards.

There is so much going on today, it feels like the first weekend packed with holiday related activities but it's drippy, chilly weekend and much more tempting to snuggle up inside.
