Happy New Year 2017~!

Shem Creek, Mt. Pleasant, SC
Happy New Year everyone! I hope 2017 treats you kindly. 2016 has had a few bumps in the road for a lot of people.

I am just back from a lovely dinner at Bistro Toulouse with friends. We try to go to a different restaurant each year to celebrate and eat early enough to be safely back on our respective couches by midnight. The simple fact that I have friends to celebrate with makes me feel very fortunate. Happy New Year! Thanks for dropping by Charleston Daily Photo and for all your kind comments.

New Year's Traditions

Charleston, S.C.
Lowcountry folks are shopping for their traditional New Year's day meal of Hoppin' Johns and collard greens to bring prosperity and good fortune in the new year.  Not a fan of black eyed peas and greens? May I suggest the Scottish tradition of inviting a handsome, dark headed gentleman bearing gifts to cross your threshold first thing after midnight? Bringing gifts no less. I like it!
First Footing:   The first person to enter your home after the stroke of midnight will influence the year you're about to have.  Ideally, he should be dark-haired, tall, and good-looking, and it would be even better if he came bearing certain small gifts such as a lump of coal, a silver coin, a bit of bread, a sprig of evergreen, and some salt. Blonde and redhead first footers bring bad luck, and female first footers should be shooed away before they bring disaster down on the household. Aim a gun at them if you have to, but don't let them near your door before a man crosses the threshold.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Folly Beach, S.C.

Happy New Year! I love New Year's Eve. Always have and hope I always will. Years ago, when Charleston had the big First Night Festival I was on the board and coordinated hundreds of volunteers for the event, roping all of my friends into staffing events and cauldrons all over town.

Now-a-days I gather some of the same group and new friends to go out for an early evening dinner and I will be home to watch the ball drop from the snug corner of my couch. We will be the first costumers of the evening at Husk. Hip, hip, hurrah! Best new restaurant in America, here we come!  I was looking for something sparkly to wear but according to my closet I am NOT a sparkle person.

I whine to my boss when I am forced to write goals each year and tell him that "goals just slow me down". Some of the best things that happened in 2011 I couldn't have anticipated to write down as resolutions so I'll keep flying by the seat of my pants and try to be brave enough not to turn down new opportunities in 2012.

Thank you to all of you who have made my life so interesting and fun this year. May 2012 treat you kindly! Thank you for dropping by Charleston Daily Photo. I hope you have some idea how grateful I am for all your comments and emails! Feel free to touch base on Facebook if you have a presence there.

Happy New Year!

Folly Beach, S.C.

What have I been up to in this year that has rushed by so fast?

My incredible team of healthcare volunteers served over 80,000 hours in 2009. Impressive!
My SCRUBS health career camps have been duplicated in at least three other hospitals this year.
My team raised $70,000 for the American Heart Association mostly with our Men in Red and fun pranks.
I took 700 people to the Lowcountry Heart Walk
Visited my daughter in Portland and went on a road trip down to the California Redwoods.
Won "Best Local Interest Blog" by the Charleston City Paper. Fun! Taught two blogging for seniors classes.
Started Charleston Daily Photo and had over 110,000 hits in the first year.
Presented at a National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Ain't I one of the big kids?!
A number of young people coming through me were hired into permanent positions at the hospital. Happy me.
Bought and paid off a sweet little car. Mine, mine, all mine!
Was featured in a hospital commercial checking out my tv husband's rash. Added "rash wife" to my resume.
Posed for a story on White Haired Warriors for Charlie. Why me? :)
Was invited to be a dinner guest for an article on Chef Sean Brock in Charleston Magazine. Unbelievable foodie fun!
Raised money for a water purification treatment system for a little mission hospital in Kenya and went to document it!
Sent boxes of books, sponsored purchase of a tv/dvd player for the Plateau Girls School in Kenya.
Helped raise $3,200 to renovate the maternity department in Plateau Mission Hospital.
Wrote winning nominations for recognition of my volunteers.
Made wonderful new friends. Behaved enough to keep my job. Kept walking almost every day!
Picture these ones in small print: Did not sell my house. Gained weight. Attended too many funerals. Whatcha gonna do?!

One big difference is the number of lovely emails and comments I've been getting. I can't thank you all enough. I am recognized everywhere I go now which blows a shy gal's mind.

No worries - I won't run out of Charleston and lowcountry pictures anytime soon. Let me know if there is something special you would like to see and holler at me as I go by. Happy New Year to you all and thank you for your friendship.
