World AIDS Day 2014

World AIDS Day, Charleston, S.C.
Today is World AIDS Day. The theme for World AIDS Day 2014 is “Focus, Partner, Achieve: An AIDS-free Generation.” We had panels of the AIDS quilt hanging in our hospital lobby today and every year it is emotional moment reading the panels designed in honor of people who have lost their lives to AIDS.

World AIDS Day - Charleston

AIDS Quilt Display, Charleston, S.C.
We always get a few panels of the AIDS quilt to display on World AIDS Day. It was especially personal because one of the names commemorated in the quilt had my last name. Also, I watched the Dallas Buyers Club this past weekend that was a reminder of the early days of AZT and any hope of treatments. We've come a long way but not quite far enough. This is a good annual reminder and Ann Caldwell and her group came out to provide entertainment.

World AIDS Day - 2012

AIDS Quilts on display, Charleston, S.C.
We had panels of the AIDS quilts on display at the hospital today to commemorate World AIDS day. The Ann Caldwell singers sang and we had a food truck rodeo in the parking lots to raise funds for the Ryan White Program. That would be MY lunch in the bottom photo thanks to Tokyo Crepes. A nice change from my usual scrappy cafeteria salad.

I can't remember if I mentioned it earlier in the year, but Ryan White's mother gave a talk here in Charleston and I got to meet her. I knew she had to be an amazing person to have a son like him. I was right. It was an honor to meet her.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, Charleston, S.C.

We had a display of panels of the AIDS quilt hanging at the the friendly little hospital across the river today in recognition of World AIDS Day. Volunteers from the Ryan White Program were there to share information about their services. Thanks to Ann Caldwell (above), the Magnolia singers and Live 5 News for covering the days events. The quilt panels never fail to make it personal.

Late cold walk tonight. I just made it to Broad St. and marched right back home. Nothing warms up a chilly house better than a brisk walk though, does it? Now it is unbearably stuffy in here.

World AIDS Day - Charleston

World AIDS Day, Charleston, S.C.

Worls AIDS Day activities: Panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt are on display today in our hospital lobby and we were entertained at lunch by singers from the broadway show RENT.

They singers were incredible but after coming all the way out they only sang one song(?) so luckily they were followed by the Citadel Gospel Choir. RENT is going to be performed at the Music Hall in January so this was a promo. The tickets go on sale today. It looks like it will be a high energy production.
