Church Photo in Lieu of Attendance - Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island Chapel, Pawleys Island, SC
I had taken a similar picture of this sweet chapel on Pawley's Island a few years ago and seem to remember having to try to position myself not to get hanging electrical wires in the shot. This time the view was clear. On backtracking I discovered that that was indeed true - the wires are gone but I learned something else, they are going to completely move the chapel off it's foundation for structural repairs. Someone has a big project on their hands!
South Strand News: Pawleys Chapel, an iconic structure that sits on an island that’s home to the oldest resort town in America, will be on the move this winter. The Chapel will be lifted up and rolled across the street – likely in January – so that repairs and upgrades can be made to the foundation.Once the work is completed over the following months, the Chapel will be put back in place in its same location.“The Pawleys Island House of Worship” owns the Chapel building.Board member Jimmy McCants told South Strand News the board received construction authorization for the work in late June.Since the Pawleys Chapel serves tourists as a place for Sunday worship, McCants said the group will hold off on the work for several more months.“The last Sunday service was the end of August,” McCants said, but the Chapel is booked for a number of weddings through December.

Teeny, tiny houses - Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island, SC
The dreamy little cottages that catch my eye don't always have the most charming histories.
In the lowcountry they were often slave cabins and that is exactly what this one on Pawleys Island was. The main house is called the LaBruce Lemon House and was built in 1858. There is a bit of history below and we are lucky - since the property is a holiday rental there are images of all the rooms in the house on this real estate page. What a fun tour!

Many thanks to my day-trip partner in crime who pulled to a screeching halt for my photo op.

Church Photo in Lieu of Attendance - Chapel of St. John the Evangelist

Chapel of St. John the Evangelist, Waccamaw, SC
Clearly not taken today since it has been pouring rain since early afternoon. When I decided I couldn't go for my usual evening walk I settled into professional level laziness. Now that it is bed time, naturally I will perk up and get a second wind.

I took this picture a few weeks ago on a quick stop at All Saints Parish before exploring Pawley's Island. This little chapel tucked away in the back of the property was a happy surprise. It is comfortably furnished inside with couches and coffee pots for small group meetings and worship next to the larger church building. More information on the SCIway page and on the SC Dept of Archives & History.
Cedar Grove Plantation Chapel – This chapel was built by Dr. Andrew Hassell for his slaves. He had it constructed sometime around 1850. The chapel was given to the All Saints Episcopal Church in 1898 and was moved off the plantation (National Register).

The Pelican Inn

Pelican Inn, Pawley's Island, SC
I grabbed a quick shot of the historic Pelican Inn on Pawley's Island as we drove by and couldn't even tell for sure if it was open for business - but it is! There is an active web reservation site with pictures of all the room. What a grand place to stay.

Church Photo in Lieu of Attendance - All Saints

All Saints, Pawley's Island, SC
I had a few spots marked to visit on yesterday's day trip to Pawley's Island and this beautiful church was a highlight. We explored the historic cemetery and peeked in the windows and then walked across the street to the other chapels.
The land of All Saints Church goes "way back" in the recorded history of this Low Country region. In the early 1700's, our property was owned by Percival Pawley and his wife Ann, who transferred the title to their son, Thomas George Pawley, and William Poole as trustees for "the people of the Waccamaw Neck" in order to build an Anglican church on the site. Our "old church" adjoining the cemetery is actually the fourth church building on that site. The first was built in the 1730's, the second in 1816, the third in 1843, and the present church in 1916. Access by the early parishioners to these early churches was gained in two ways—by land and by sea! On the south side of the All Saints property is a wetland drainage basin, which forms the small creek which crosses Kings River Rd. This creek winds behind the Rectory, behind the cemetery and Old Church, where it becomes a larger body of navigable water known to this day as "Chapel Creek". Chapel Creek runs out to the Waccamaw River. Many of today's residents of the Waverly neighborhood have boats behind their homes in canals which run into Chapel Creek. "Back in the Day" owners of Waccamaw or Pee Dee River Plantations might have been sailed or rowed to church in high style, navigating up Chapel Creek to a landing at the back of the Old Church.

Pawley's Island Hammock Shops

Pawley's Island Hammock Shops, Pawley's Island, SC
The Pawley's Island Hammock shop area is the perfect lunch spot on the way to Brookgreen Garden. Since I only get up there every couple of years it seems like there is a new restaurant in the same spot each year. It is too bad that it is so difficult to keep a restaurant going but we had a good lunch at BisQit.

It's always fun to wander through the the quaint building that are now shops and restaurants and the original Pawley's Island Hammock Shop.

In other news, check out my friend, author Josephine Humphrey's featured in the Post & Courier, this time for cooking! Like writing fiction, cooking for her is play and adventure.

Who else is doing a Planking Challenge? The staff at Roper Hospital held an Ultimate Planking Challenge and I was blow away by the participation. They finally called the end of the competition at ten minutes and two nurses were still holding the position. Wowza! Congrats ladies!

Praline Review

The Candy Cottage, Pawley's Island, SC
I have been on a praline reviewing tour of South Carolina. Charleston, Savannah, Beaufort, Georgetown and now Pawley's Island. If they sell pralines it is my duty to buy one and do a taste test. I joke that I am writing the definitive critique of pralines. The catch is I haven't had one I didn't like yet. Mmmm....yep. That one IS good.

The other thing I am beginning to suspect is that they may all be made by River Street Sweets in Savannah and distributed to all the different candy shops so I am basically eating exactly the same thing each time.

I hope you don't think that will stop me?

Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens, Pawley's Island, S.C.
I was without a computer for about a week recently so I have a few backlogged photos waiting to be posted. Spring is the most beautiful time to visit Brookgreen Gardens and well worth a trip up the coast. It is the first sculpture garden in the US and has an impressive collection of statues.
Brookgreen Gardens, the first public sculpture garden in America, has in its collection more than 1,400 works by over 350 sculptors. Exhibited within the gardens is the largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculpture in the country, by sculptors who worked from the early nineteenth century to the present. Brookgreen Gardens is a National Historical Landmark, and is accredited by the American Association of Museums. Brookgreen offers workshops in sculpture by nationally known sculptors throughout the year.
