Health Care Hero Awards

Rocky, Pet Therapy Health Care Hero, Charleston, SC
Each year at this time I look forward to nominating a few of my volunteers for the Health Care Hero awards. One of my best looking team members took home an award for Health Care Hero this year - Rocky the pet therapy dog! Rocky serves in the Cancer Center offering a little comfort to patients receiving their chemo and infusions. He has just the right touch. Congrats Rocky!

There were many worthy recipients honored this evening. Another volunteer on my team was honored in the human volunteer category - Solveig Bracy who has hand knit over 1,200 bonnets for new born babies. The awards are sponsored by the Charleston Regional Business Journal.

Health Care Heroes

Molly Merryman, Charleston, SC
One of my favorite events in Charleston is the annual Health Care Heroes recognition event at the Francis Marion Hotel sponsored by the Charleston Regional Business Journal where professionals, nurses, volunteers, engineers and physicians are honored for their extraordinary acts of service and heroism. A couple of years ago they added the Pet Therapy category and this evening Molly our star took the award home.

Molly and her Pet Therapist/owner Jim Merryman go on volunteer rounds at three different hospitals in Charleston. A few years ago the CEO at Mount Pleasant Hospital at that time, came looking for her and led Molly into the Intensive Care Unit - not on the usual route for a therapy dog. Completely out of character for Molly she jumped up on the patient's bed and started licking her face. The patient who had been unresponsive woke up laughing. Well done Molly!

Edit: sorry for all the grammatical errors, kids. I was typing sleepy.

Partying with the Healthcare Heroes

Roper St. Francis Healthcare Heroes, 2014
I've had the most inspiring evening at the Charleston Regional Business Journal's Healthcare Heroes Awards Ceremony at the Francis Marion Hotel. Nominees were recognized in many categories including healthcare professionals, nurses, physicians, EMTs, service animals and volunteers.

I was there to celebrate them all but especially the young woman below who is one of my volunteers. The week after she learned CPR last year she was camping with her grandfather and saved the life of a toddler who drowned in a pond. I am so proud of Brittany I could bust. This gal will go far.

Health Care Heroes Banquet - 2013

Health Care Heroes Banquet, Charleston, S.C.
I enjoyed a lovely evening last night when I was honored as a finalist at the Charleston Regional Business Journal's Health Care Hero recognition event at the Francis Marion Hotel. Wow. What an incredible group to be associated with. This gang includes nominees from Roper St. Francis Healthcare. I was included as a nominee in the Healthcare professional category - which absolutely blew me away.

Normally I am the one who writes nominations for these events and this time my friend Colleen Cooney surprised me. Thanks folks! I felt very fortunate.

Our Health Care Heroes

Health Care Heroes Banquet, Francis Marion Hotel, Charleston, S,C,

I just got back from the Health Care Heroes event sponsored by the Charleston Business journal at the Francis Marion Hotel, an event that leaves you feeling very good about people in health care.

Kristy Hill, the nurse pictured above with her husband, actually donated her own kidney to a gentleman who needed it. I nominated the lady to my right below, Estelle Whitney for her years of volunteering with newborns in our nursery and Dr. Blake Ohlson was recognized for his work with amputees. I work with a pretty impressive group! Congratulations folks!
