Dock St. Theater color matching

Dock St. Theater, Charleston, S.C.

One of these days I'm going to get down on my belly to take a picture and I won't be able to get up. Groan. It's going to be a sad, sad thing. Check out the matching paint trim on the doors at the Dock St. Theater and the bike. Coolness!

Have a good Sunday kids.

Evening Light

Dock St. Theater, Church St., Charleston, S.C.

This has been a rush, rush, rush week but the one advantage of ending my days with meetings in town is that I get home in time to walk while the light turns Charleston into a sparkling jewel box. These were taken on a Queen St./Church St. route but you can't go wrong lately, everything is so beautiful.

Bloggers get even better looking! A Picture a Day is off on a European adventure and left her sister in charge as guest blogger. Her sister happens to be Valarie, Miss South Carolina US. I met Valarie a few months ago when she graciously visited the friendly little hospital across the river, on Valentine's Day as an honorary volunteer and posed for a million photos with all of our staff and patients.

Dock St. Theater

Dock St. Theater, Charleston, S.C.

People are still googling for images of the historic Dock St. theater so I went through my files to see what other pictures I had and found this one with the crepe myrtle trees in bloom taken before the renovation. The repairs are almost finished and it will be open for this year's Spoleto Festival.

For a minimum of $250 you can even go to the opening reception.

I've had such a nice evening. I invited my upstairs and downstairs tenants (how did you think I paid my property taxes?) and my son to dinner, set the table and actually cooked dinner. I do this so infrequently now that I feel like I am playing grown up. We each do such completely different things it was fascinating to listen to them talk about their jobs and interests. Now, if they just stay put forever I'll be all set. I bribed them with gumbo and sent them home with leftover pear tart.

Dock Street Theater

The renovation of the historic Dock Street Theater is nearly done and the almost 300 year old theater will be open for business during the Spoleto Festival this spring, featuring a production of "Flora" the first opera ever performed in the American colonies in Charleston in 1735. Flora was one of the first shows at the Dock St. Theater.

Can we do history or what?

Dock Street Theater: The main portion of the building was constructed around 1809 as Planter's Hotel. The hotel was built by Alexander Calder and his wife, who did so by renovating several pre-existing buildings at the site. The main entrance may not have been built until 1855 by J.W. Gamble.

The hotel was used extensively by planters from the midlands of South Carolina, who traveled to Charleston during horse-racing season. It was noted for its wonderful food and drinks during this era, and the South's famous Planter's Punch may have originated here.

I can't wait to get in and snoop around.
