Additions to the corner store series

Spring & Cannon St., Charleston, SC
I tracked down a few additions to the Charleston corner store series.
Have I missed any? It's good to have a goal for a walk.

Corner stores - from another walk

Queen St. Grocery, Charleston, SC
Clearly I like neighborhood convenience stores. I missed some last week so directed my walk this morning to catch this series. I used to shop at the last one pictured on Pitt St. and was sad to see it empty but it appears to be under renovation.

Today is a watch and worry day to see what track hurricane Dorian decides to take. Watch and worry and hope it skirts the coast at a safe distance. Y'all stay safe and dry!

Corner Stores of Charleston

Charlie's Convenient Store, Jasper St., Charleston, SC
I passed a few of the corner stores on my rambling walk this morning. All add to this collection next time I am in town. How nice to still be able to walk to the corner for eggs and milk although if the signs posted are a clear indication, the shoppers are more likely college students popping in for beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets.

Corner stores of Charleston

Burbages, Charleston, SC
We need more of them, character corner stores. Some die, some figure out a way to survive. This one is Burbages on Broad St.

Corner Stores - Burbages

Burbages, Charleston, S.C.
It's good to see Burbage's flourishing after the former owner retired after 67 years of business. We don't have too many attractive and successful corner stores and they are such treasures. Link to P & C article on the history of this particular store.

So many stores are impersonal chain convenience stores. I wish we had more of these around. Looking back on past entries, I have a few on Corner Stores of Charleston.

Have a good day kids! I am hitting the road.

Corner stores & gourmet treats

Bull St. Gourmet - Bull St., Charleston, S.C.
I had to note that this Bull St. Gourmet is on Bull St. because the newer one where I liked to hang out halfway through my evening walk to enjoy my roasted portobello sandwich and a glass of wine is on lower King St. These little corner stores and gourmet grocery stores are one of the things I do miss about living on the peninsula. I love it that we do still have some character spots.

This week has taken the wind out of my sails. The weekend is so close I can almost taste it. Yum. What movie shall I go to?

Corner Stores of Charleston

Corner Store, Charleston, S.C.

I've done entries on corner stores of Charleston before but had to take another shot of this one with the vintage car in front of it. There is something so much more charming about a corner store over a chain convenience store, isn't there?

I believe the lottery sign on the door advertises that jackpot I had plans for but didn't win.

Who is up for a long weekend? Not me yet. I am going to work tomorrow and take Monday off instead since my daughter is coming home. Woohoo!

Thursday Hodge Podge

Coming & Beaufain St., Charleston, S.C.

I like a town with corner stores. I need to start supporting them more than I do.

$2,800 to get my air conditioner fixed. What kinda summer fun is that? Blah.

Here's a bedtime story for your kids. They will never play with fire after you read this to them a couple of times. Yikes! The Story of Little Kettle head. Written in 1904 by Helen Bannerman. No subtle moral to this tale. Off with her head!

It's perfect peach season! The problem is, living alone I have to eat four or five peaches a day to stay ahead of them rotting when I buy a basket.

What does everyone have planned for the long weekend? I was looking at the Johnny Cash tribute at the Village Playhouse on Saturday night. They are selling hot dogs and hamburgers in front of the theater before the show. Maybe I'll see you there.

Corner Stores of Charleston

Corner Store
by Jonathan Richman

Well I walked past just yesterday
And I couldn't bear that new mall no more
I can't expect you all to see it my way
But you may not know what was there before
And I want them to put back my old corner store.

Well I walked past just like I say
And I felt this hurt that would not go home
I can't expect that you're gonna see it my way
But you may not know the trees I've known
And I want them to put back my old corner store.

I know it costs more money to shop there
But this was love, this was love
I know you had to pay more money
I'll pay money, I'll pay more
I don't care what the mall has got
I want back that corner store

And what did I feel when I walked by slow
Sorrow sorrow, all around
Why I would feel sorrow I now know
I smell a ghost smell from the ground
That old wooden smell from the old corner store

I walked past one final time
And I wished the worst on the place I shop
Now I can't expect everyone to feel like I am
But I spot a trend that has got to stop
And I want them to put back that old corner store
