Cemetery Walking

Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, SC

Show me your cemeteries, and I will tell you what kind of people you have.
Benjamin Franklin

Clearly we have the kind of people who love children. Although this child died in 1882 I have never walked through Magnolia Cemetery without seeing flowers or trinkets placed on this little one's grave. It touches my heart every time.

  1. it would be interesting to know the history behind that grave.

I just discovered the main cemetary in my town last week... I'll be posting pictures of it's entrance soon... amazing architecture (sp) for a cemetary!

  3. I have never seen a cradle-form monument before. I guess it's fitting for a small child though. Nice that people still leave her flowers.

  6. We have a huge cemetery here and I have hardly seen any of it. Now that I have a bike I should take a trip out there.

  7. I remember walking through a beautiful old cemetery in Charleston when visiting a zillion years ago...little green lizards scooting around, moss hanging down, was just so moody and beautiful. I love this monument to a lost child, the way they did what they could do to honor their baby.

We went on a tour into Havana while in Cuba, drove past a huge Cemetery...fourth largest urban cemetery apparently. Heather got some pictures from the bus. They might be on her facebook, haven't checked in a while. Sally

My husband and I spend time in this cemetary every time we visit Charleston. We are not cemetary buffs - this is just one of the most peaceful places in the world. This monument to a child is both beautiful and sad.
