Short Week Monday

Wentworth St., Charleston, S.C.
It's an odd week with the holiday on Wednesday. People can't seem to decide which direction to go to stretch it into a long weekend. I ended my afternoon taking pictures of people dressed in superhero costumes on the lawn in front of Roper Hospital. I think we almost caused a few wrecks.

Here is a neato mansion on Ashley Avenue for commenter lowandslow who enjoys the Charleston architecture. I passed it as I walked down to my dentist on Wentworth Ave. to let them clean off the evidence that I live on black tea.

Hey kids, I am heading to Chicago on Monday to meet up with my daughter. What should I do, where should I go, what should I eat?

  1. I sowed my wild oats in Chicago in the '60's and it's still one of my favorite cities. Sigh! It's been awhile since DH and I spent a week-end there and most of my favorite haunts are long gone.

Gene and Georgetti's is the "finest steak house in Chicago since 1941" and it's still there. (http://www.geneandgeorgetti.com/) Great food with charming surly waiters (at least they were part of the draw...way back when). DH proposed to me at Mortons on the Lake (is it still there?) and we eloped one fine day at Old St. Mary's Church 50 years ago, which has since been torn down. The good Paulist Fathers kept our secret!

If nothing else you MUST go to the Art Institute to see the Chagall windows; I used to visit at different times of the day to see the different effects of the play of light on the windows. Oh, how I love that town!!

  2. Have fun in Chicago! I could give you a long list, but maybe it would mean more if I whittled it down to one? The Thorne Miniature Rooms at the Art Institute of Chicago!!!!! My favorite part of the museum!

  4. Well, you asked what to eat too! There is a lovely cafe in the Art Institue...lower level, looks out at a garden/courtyard. I can't remember the name of it, but it is really lovely. The Green Zebra is a yummy place for interesting, innovative vegetarian meals (not particularly close to the Art Institute, but I had a wonderful meal there in March).

    1. Thank you! I love miniature rooms. We used to have a display of them here in Charleston and it was my favorite part of the Gibbes Art Museum but they are no longer there. The Green Zebra sounds like it would suit my veggie daughter perfectly. Keep 'em coming!
