A glimpse of the rare caged joggling board

Joggling Board, Charleston, S.C.

The rare caged joggling board.

For Waldo who is fond of joggling boards. Soon we will have them all photographed and tagged.

Here is the history of this lowcountry tradition: Joggling Board.

  1. Interesting. I'd never heard of such a thing before. Wonder why it didn't catch on elsewhere?

  4. It's odd... for all the photos of joggling boards in the world, there are so few of anyone actually joggling! Maybe it's like the Masons... people only joggle in secret?

We got one in the back that the kids in the neighborhood are almost always on during "play time".

My brother-in-law used to make them (or had them made) without the pegs that the long board has to hold it in position on the rockers (he claimed that they were a pinch hazard and weren't necessary, which, grudgingly, now, I agree). So if you see any of those Joan, they're his.

My in-laws have gone through at least 3 of them because the rockers eventually rot when not on a concrete surface. Worse yet, the carriage tours were more likely to stop in front of the house to tell the story of the jogging board, making that portion of the street a common horse urinal. Ironically, the main reason the carriages CAN stop there is that my in-laws petitioned, successfully for a No Parking area in front of the house, as you can't turn into the parking area unless you can swing your SUV into the parking lane. Thus the carriages have a temporary "parking place" where they can wave the traffic around them. Quick story:

One time, a carriage tour driver tried to wave me around when I wanted to park at the house. Normally, the drivers understand my hand signals that I'm going into the place they are blocking my access, but this girl didn't get it. I finally had to get out of the car, and talk to her.

She: "You can't park here (opposite to this drive), it's a no parking zone!!"

Me: "I know, I'm trying to get into the drive!"

She: "That's private property, you can't park there just because the gate is open!" (I had already opened the gate and left it open because I knew I'd be back in a couple hours).

Me: "I understand that, I'm a guest in the house"

She: "This house isn't for rent, I know because the owners are rarely here, but there are never any cars besides the ones I recognize and your car isn't one of them."

Me: (Noticing there are 3 cars behind me) "Whatever"

So I get back into the car and slowly drive around the block, so that she can clear out. I wonder what she thought when my car was in one of the parking places all weekend long?

  6. Marcheline - true, but you so rarely see people outside enjoying their yards at all anymore. We all sit inside in our air conditioned homes.

JFH - Wow! You have it worse than I do! At least I just have to hope people haven't blocked my drive. I finally got an "x" spot next to the drive so I can at least pull out. Re joggling boards, someone else offered let to let me go in their yard and take a photo of an old one, I need to remember to go do that.
