Perry Family Travels
Hmmmm....where do you think this is? The photo next to it looks like Vienna but these old slides were not labeled. Does anyone recognize the landmark?
I am the shorty in the back row. Yes. There were eight of us.
Edit: I added this second view clearly taken on the same day. Vienna!
Could that be Berlin with the Brandenburg Gate way in the background?
ReplyDeleteWe're not sure where it is, but isn't it fun when you have to guess about old photos?
ReplyDeleteDarryl and Ruth : )
Joan - it's hard to tell from a scanned photo, but maybe you can judge it better with the original on hand. My guess is the Gloriette at Schloss Schönbrunn (Schoenbrunn Castle) in Vienna.
ReplyDeleteCheck here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloriette (thanks goodness for Wikipedia) and here for more pictures that might give you an idea:

Let us know what you find out!
Thanks folks! Pixel has it! That is the structure - no doubt. I will go back and add the next shot which it the Castle in Vienna and we are clearly wearing the same clothes. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you've ever seen Kenneth Branagh's movie version of "Hamlet", but he went to great lengths to make Blenheim palace look like this place. Over 180 acres had to be covered in fake snow... and he could have just used the place in your pictures! 8-)
ReplyDeleteYou should write about your family travels across continents and how about a link to your father's interview( you mentioned in an earlier post)?. You may be knowing that Mawlai became a part of Shillong town in 1961,which indicates that your family stayed there when it was still very rural.I hope that it celebrates the golden jubilee year of its urban avataar and that they remember your father.
ReplyDeleteMarcheline - I have not seen it.
ReplyDeleteNamrata - My Dad's interview is on a CD but it is almost an hour long. I made copies for all of my siblings. I am thinking of going to Shillong this year - first time back if I do. Tentatively thinking of November. I didn't know it was the golden jubilee. We moved there in 1963 and yes, it was rural. We hiked to rivers on the weekend to wash clothes and picnic.
