Pulling up to the station, St. George, S.C.

St. George, S.C.

There is a cheerful mural of a train pulling up to a station facing the Mystic Gas Station & Convenience store in St. George, S.C. Entering the store, the shop keeper looked suspiciously familiar. He was clearly the model for the train engineer in the mural and was happy to don his cap to pose for a picture. Fun!

  1. I love this! I have been here before and think it is amazing! There is so much art out there that we don't see often enough... especially in these small towns. It often gets over looked. Makes me want a cool mural in my home!

Have you read 'Travels by a Lesser Line' written by Bill Aitken(Scottish National turned Indian Citizen in 1972).Being from a hilly part of Assam,I enjoyed the part where he describes his experience of pulling up("bowled into" in his words)to a Plains Section station(after getting up in the Hill Section)ending an adventurous ride with the engineer on a trolley(He had chosen that hot seat as he wanted to take photos of the viaducts).I quote"I clung on for dear life afraid at every curve that we might fly off the rails,as he (the Engineer)casually eased off to 30 kmph.Crossing the yawning viaducts was the most terrifying, for the void lay all about us.Shouting into the wind, the engineer told me this was his accustomed stint and in the 162 km line, the 19 km of 1 in 37 gradient was the steepest. It was dark and cold as we bowled into Lumding with the searchlight on.........."
