AC in use

Old County Store, Hwy 176, S.C.

This is one of my favorite handwritten signs. Computer generated signs took so much fun out of life. Sadly this particular Country Store is closed.

My theory is that you don't ever get used to the heat. You simply get used to sweating in public. Drip, drip, drip.

It's so hot in South Carolina that...

* A seat belt makes a pretty good branding iron.
* When the temperature drops below 95, you feel a bit chilly.
* It's so hot outside it will make you return things you never stole.
* It's hotter than a steel playground at noon.
* You can attend any function wearing shorts and a tank top.
* The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
* Hot water now comes out of both taps.
* You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
* You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
* It's so hot you could spit fire. But, please don't.

  1. Until two years ago, we used to live near Columbia, SC. I remember the saying, "There's nothing between hell and Columbia, South Carolina, in the summer but an open screen door."

  2. Found your website today after reading a review of Pat Conroy's new book. I like him as an author and have always wanted to visit Charleston. Your photos are beautiful. I definitely want to visit now. It hasn't been too bad here lately in TN but I am in agreement with those "hot" statements. I have experienced all of them living in the south.

  3. Great sign Joan. Not sure why but I never really thought of SC as being in the south and therefore hot!

  4. Pixel - It's all true!

Deborah - I love Pat Conroy. I need to get his new book. I haven't even read the review yet myself. Glad you found me though :)

Paul - I'm afraid it is hot, and humid. You can't find a lovelier backdrop for sweating though.

That is something I think of my parents saying...

"We are not cooling the outside, so shut that door!"
