RIP, Little Rosalie

Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, S.C.

Someone mentioned the baby's crib tomb in the last series of pictures I posted from Magnolia Cemetery and I went back to see what other pictures I had of it.

Looking back through my album it looks like I take a picture of it every time I am there and in each one there is a different arrangement of flowers or decoration. Most recently was the Christmas Angel. There is something so heartbreaking about an infant death and clearly someone still cares for this tomb.

That baby bassinet/crib picture intrigues me. It looks like the face may be made out of metal of some sort. Do you think it's the actual image of the child's face. See what else you can find out about this gravestone. It's also interesting someone is still interested enough to keep flowers there. I suspect there's an interesting story behind this one.

I'd be willing to bet the person who is leaving flowers is not related to Rosalie at all... I think it's someone who lost a child, and doesn't want Rosalie to be lonely.

I think I will track down the story!

This is one of my favorite stones at Magnolia! I have a ton of pictures of it, also. It's located at one of the loveliest posts in the cemetery. I would love to know the history of it!!

Also, my friend Beth of http://www.graveaddiction.com/ confirmed that the face of the stone is made of bronze.

Pamela, Hey - that is grand detective work! I was given the new book on Magnolia called City of the Silent but it doesn't mention the tomb at all.

I just flipped through the whole thing. I think it concentrates on the caracters who are buried there so perhaps an infnat didn't have enough of a historical background to make it into the book.

It looks like several of her children passed away very young. Perhaps when I get a chance I will make a trip to the library and look through the death index card catalog for them. If you've never looked through them you should take gander... some interesting causes of death back then!

I definitely need to get that book!

I think it was me that commented, I find it (for assorted reasons) very moving.

Susan, I think it was.

Pamela, I feel like I have a researcher on staff here. Cool!

I know this is five years late, but I found this:

This is her brother who survived his teens, at least. Looks like the whole bunch of her unfortunate brothers and sisters are in a family plot. I photographed her grave years ago but did not notice the other Whites buried there.

Well I am wondering who the sculptor was and the artist that did the face mask. There are several etchings around the face but cannot decifer who it is except for Burdy.
